The Best Raptor Migration Watch Points in the World

Raptor migration concentrates at geographic bottlenecks: the tips of peninsulas, the foot of mountain ranges where soaring birds avoid open water, and the narrow land bridges between continents. At these points, what is ordinarily a dispersed, continent-wide movement becomes a river of raptors that passes through a single viewable corridor. The sites below represent the most significant of those corridors on four continents.

1. Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, Pennsylvania, USA

Hawk Mountain is the founding institution of raptor conservation in North America. Rosalie Edge purchased the ridge in 1934 specifically to end the then-legal practice of shooting migrating raptors from the Kittatinny Ridge. It became the world's first refuge for birds of prey and has maintained continuous systematic counts since 1934 — the longest unbroken raptor count in the world.

The North Lookout sits at 549 metres on the Kittatinny Ridge. In autumn, northwesterly winds push broad-winged hawks, sharp-shinned hawks, Cooper's hawks, golden eagles, and sixteen other raptor species along the ridge's thermal axis. The peak count day in mid-September, when Broad-winged Hawk kettles spiral overhead in the thousands, is one of the most dramatic spectacles in North American ornithology. The sanctuary's visitor infrastructure is excellent: counts are conducted daily during the September to November season and are publicly visible on the Hawk Mountain website.

2. Veracruz River of Raptors, Mexico

The Cardel-Chichicaxtle corridor in coastal Veracruz state carries the single largest concentration of migrating raptors recorded anywhere. Counts conducted by Pronatura Veracruz since 1991 regularly exceed four to six million individual raptors in a single season. The dominant species are Turkey Vultures, Broad-winged Hawks, and Swainson's Hawks, with Mississippi Kites and Osprey adding to the flood.

The movement is concentrated by the Gulf of Mexico coast on one side and the Sierra Madre Oriental on the other, funnelling birds into a corridor only a few kilometres wide. Peak movement is in October, when thermals form in the humid Gulf air. The Cardel count site is accessible, staffed by Pronatura volunteers, and operates with rigorous daily counting methodology.

3. Falsterbo, Sweden

The Falsterbo Peninsula in southernmost Sweden is the primary raptor bottleneck for birds migrating from Scandinavia into continental Europe. The peninsula projects into the western Baltic, and soaring raptors crossing from Denmark tend to concentrate at the tip rather than commit to the sea crossing. On good September and October days with winds from the north or northwest, Honey Buzzards, Sparrowhawks, Marsh Harriers, Ospreys, and Rough-legged Buzzards pass through in numbers that require counting in the thousands.

Falsterbo Bird Observatory has operated systematic counts here since 1973. The adjacent ringing station is one of the largest passerine ringing operations in northern Europe. The combination of passerine fall and raptor movement in late September makes this one of the most productive autumn sites in Europe.

4. Strait of Gibraltar / Tarifa, Spain

The 14-kilometre crossing between Tarifa in Spain and Ceuta on the North African coast is the main soaring-bird bottleneck between Europe and Africa. In autumn, Short-toed Eagles, Black Kites, Honey Buzzards, Black Storks, Griffon Vultures, and Egyptian Vultures all concentrate on the Spanish side, waiting for thermal conditions that allow the crossing. In spring the movement reverses.

The counts at Tarifa, run by the Fundación Migres, regularly record over 400,000 raptors per season. Peak Honey Buzzard movement in September can run to 15,000 birds in a single day. The site is accessible from Tarifa town; the Hotel Dos Mares ridge is the standard watching point. The sea crossing is visible, and on peak days you can watch individual eagles and vultures commit to the water and disappear south.

5. Batumi, Georgia

The Batumi bottleneck on the eastern Black Sea coast is the primary route for raptors migrating between eastern Europe and Central Asia, and on into the African wintering grounds. The Caucasus mountains on the inland side and the sea on the coast channel migrants into the narrow Colchic lowlands. Batumi Raptor Count, operated annually since 2008, records steppe eagles, Montagu's Harriers, Levant Sparrowhawks, honey buzzards, short-toed eagles, and pallid harriers in numbers that reflect the full weight of the Central Asian and eastern European breeding population.

Steppe Eagle (Aquila nipalensis) counts at Batumi are among the most reliable anywhere; the site regularly records 50,000 or more Steppe Eagles in a single autumn, far exceeding totals at any other watch point. The peak Levant Sparrowhawk movement in mid-September can run to 100,000 birds in a day on ideal conditions. The project welcomes volunteer counters; accommodation is available in Batumi city.

6. Eilat, Israel

Eilat sits at the northern tip of the Gulf of Aqaba, where the Sinai Peninsula and the Arabian land mass converge. All soaring migrants moving between Africa and Eurasia that funnel east of the Mediterranean must cross or near this point. Spring raptor counts at Eilat run from late February to early May and encompass a remarkable diversity of species: Greater Spotted Eagle, Imperial Eagle, Lesser Kestrel, Long-legged Buzzard, Pallid Harrier, and both Western and Eastern Marsh Harriers.

The International Birding and Research Centre in Eilat (IBRCE) manages counts and ringing operations at the migration monitoring station. The diversity and density of soaring migrants in spring makes Eilat unmatched in the Western Palearctic for a week-long raptor watching visit.

7. Cape May, New Jersey, USA

Cape May sits at the tip of the New Jersey Peninsula, projecting into Delaware Bay. Raptors moving south down the Atlantic seaboard concentrate here before attempting or avoiding the water crossing, making it a dual-season site — raptors in autumn, shorebirds and passerines in both seasons.

The Cape May Raptor Banding Project at the nearby Higbee Beach area rings thousands of accipiters annually, providing critical data on population trends in Sharp-shinned Hawks and Cooper's Hawks. In mid-October, north-westerly winds push accipiters through in their hundreds, with Merlins, Peregrine Falcons, and American Kestrels adding to the count. The Cape May Bird Observatory organises guided hawk-watching and ringing demonstrations during the peak autumn season.

What to bring and when to go

The core season at most Northern Hemisphere watch points runs from late August (for early migrants like Honey Buzzard and Black Kite) through November (for late eagles and buteos). The peak week at each site differs: Broad-winged Hawk at Hawk Mountain peaks between September 12 and 20 most years; Steppe Eagle at Batumi peaks between September 20 and October 10. Planning around the known peak improves the odds of high-count days.

Binoculars for hawk watching should be 8×42 or 10×42 for general scanning; a scope is useful for distant identification but not as fundamental as at shorebird or waterfowl sites. Most birds at watch points pass overhead or across the ridge, making binoculars sufficient for most identification. Weather notes matter: a journal kept across multiple visits accumulates the pattern of which conditions produce which movement, and the learning curve from two or three years of regular watching is steep and rewarding.
