The Snowy Owl: Arctic Hunter and Winter Wanderer

The Snowy Owl (Bubo scandiacus) is the heaviest owl in North America and one of the heaviest in the world, with females reaching up to 2.9 kilograms. It is circumpolar in distribution, breeding from Arctic Alaska and Canada across Greenland, Scandinavia, Russia, and Siberia. In winter, it retreats variably south — sometimes only to the southern Arctic or sub-Arctic; in irruption years, it appears on beaches, airports, and open fields across the northern United States, southern Canada, and northern Europe in numbers that can reach hundreds of individuals simultaneously across the continent. These irruptions bring the Snowy Owl to the attention of millions of people who would otherwise never encounter it, and they generate the largest single-species surge in eBird submissions each winter they occur.

The lemming cycle and its consequences for owls

The Snowy Owl's breeding success is directly tied to the four-year lemming cycle. Lemmings (Lemmus lemmus in Eurasia; Lemmus trimucronatus and others in North America) cycle between low and high density over a period of approximately three to four years. In peak lemming years, the tundra surface produces so much prey that Snowy Owls can raise clutches of seven to ten chicks — a clutch size matched by few other birds of comparable mass. In low lemming years, breeding may not occur at all.

The consequence for winter distribution is counterintuitive: irruptions are not caused by food shortage pushing hungry owls south, as was once believed. Research using tracking data has shown that irruption birds are predominantly immatures — birds hatched in the preceding high-lemming breeding year — moving south in their first winter as part of normal natal dispersal. The large irruptions therefore reflect high breeding success two to three years earlier, not starvation. Adults tend to remain further north, tracking prey availability more flexibly.

Morphology: white feathers and heat retention

The white plumage of the Snowy Owl, particularly the near-pure white of adult males, is its most recognizable feature. Adult males are almost entirely white with minimal barring; females and immature birds are heavily barred with dark brown. The whiteness serves a dual function: cryptic plumage against snow and ice, and thermal insulation through the dense feather layer it represents. The feathering of the Snowy Owl's feet is the most extreme of any owl — the toes are covered in bristle-feathers down to the claw base, providing insulation against contact with frozen ground and snow.

The Snowy Owl is adapted to hunting in full daylight — the Arctic summer provides continuous illumination. Unlike most owls, which are strictly nocturnal and rely on auditory hunting in darkness, Snowy Owls hunt by sight in open terrain, using the elevated perch hunting technique: sitting on a high point (a fence post, a hay bale, a beach wrack line), scanning with the large forward-facing eyes, then powering into a direct stoop at prey detected at distances of 100 metres or more.

Breeding biology on the Arctic tundra

Snowy Owls nest directly on the ground, on elevated tundra hummocks or ridgelines that provide a view of the surrounding terrain. The nest is a shallow scrape; no nest material is added. Clutch size varies from one to over ten eggs depending on lemming abundance; incubation is by the female alone while the male hunts. Hatching is asynchronous — the first egg begins incubating before the last is laid — so the chicks hatch at intervals of one to three days. In high-lemming years, all chicks survive; in marginal years, the youngest chicks starve while the oldest receive all food deliveries.

Irruption watching and eBird

The winters of 2011-12, 2013-14, and 2017-18 produced major Snowy Owl irruptions in eastern North America, with hundreds of individual birds tracked through eBird. The density of sightings in coastal Massachusetts, Long Island, and the Great Lakes shore during peak irruption years has produced coordinated reporting on local Facebook birding groups that allows observers to locate individual birds on specific beaches or airport grasslands. Several irruption birds became locally famous: individual owls at Boston's Logan Airport, Ottawa's fields, and the Outer Banks of North Carolina were observed and photographed thousands of times by visitors over multi-week stays.

Conservation status: Vulnerable

The Snowy Owl was assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List in 2017, based on a population estimate revision that suggested a global population of approximately 28,000 mature individuals — substantially lower than earlier estimates of 200,000 that were based on uncritical extrapolation from breeding density in peak lemming years. The lower estimate better reflects actual population size by accounting for the extended periods when breeding success is near zero. Climate change affecting Arctic tundra habitat and lemming cycle dynamics represents an additional medium-term threat.

Snowy Owl irruptions and how to follow them

The Snowy Owl's irregular southward irruptions into the temperate zone — driven by lemming population cycles on the Arctic tundra — have become one of the most anticipated and documented wildlife spectacles in North American and European birding. The irruption years (roughly every four years, though timing is irregular) bring birds into agricultural landscapes, coastal marshes, and urban environments where they would not normally occur, making Snowy Owl identification and behavior available to birders far outside the Arctic.

The 2013-2014 North American irruption was the largest recorded in over a century, with Snowy Owls appearing in every US state east of the Mississippi and reaching as far south as Florida and Texas. The scale of the event drove Project SNOWstorm, a citizen science initiative that radio-tagged owls as they arrived and tracked their movements throughout the winter. The resulting dataset showed that irruption birds disperse along distinct geographic corridors following coastlines, river valleys, and open agricultural areas — revealing movement patterns invisible from point observations.

In Europe, Snowy Owl irruptions typically affect Scandinavia and Scotland; exceptional years bring birds to the British coast and occasionally to Ireland. Shetland and the Outer Hebrides hold the most regular European wintering birds outside the breeding range.

Snowy Owls that settle into agricultural areas during winter often remain at the same location for weeks or months, providing extended observation opportunities uncommon with most other owls. A barn floor, a hay bale, or a power pole along a snowy agricultural road can be occupied for the entire winter — one of the reasons Snowy Owl irruption years attract attention from photographers and birders who would not normally make owl-watching a priority.
