Seabird Watching: Headland Seawatching and Pelagic Trips
Seabirds spend most of their lives at distances that make conventional birdwatching inadequate. You cannot approach a storm petrel fluttering over deep Atlantic water from a nature reserve car park. The two routes to prolonged, close observation are headland seawatching — standing on a exposed promontory and scanning the sea — and pelagic trips, where a chartered boat takes observers into the seabirds' own territory. Both reward patience and tolerance for discomfort.
Headland seawatching: the technique
Seawatching involves sitting or standing at a fixed point on a coastal headland, scanning a consistent arc of sea with binoculars or scope, and recording every seabird that passes. The principle is similar to raptor watching at a hawk watch ridge: geography concentrates the movement, and a patient observer at the right point records what would otherwise be spread invisibly across hundreds of kilometres of ocean.
The key variables are wind direction, time of year, and the geometry of the headland. Birds moving along a coast are pushed towards it and past it when wind blows onshore; a west or south-west wind at an Atlantic headland concentrates birds close inshore. Overcast conditions with moderate winds generally produce better seawatching than calm blue-sky days, when birds disperse. Start watching at first light if possible: the greatest movement is typically in the first two to three hours.
A high-quality tripod-mounted scope with a zoom eyepiece is close to essential. Many seabirds at headlands are at 200-plus metres and require magnification above 30× for confident identification. Individual binoculars suffice for close-in gannets and skuas but miss the shearwaters and petrels that make extended seawatching sessions productive.
Strumble Head, Wales
Strumble Head in Pembrokeshire projects into the Irish Sea on the main passage route between Atlantic wintering grounds and Irish Sea and North Sea breeding colonies. From July through November, Manx Shearwaters stream south in their hundreds to thousands on south-westerly winds, often close inshore. European Storm Petrels, Balearic Shearwaters, Sooty Shearwaters, and Arctic, Great, and Pomarine Skuas add to movements from August onwards. October south-westerlies after prolonged gales push pelagic species far closer than usual: Leach's Storm Petrels in hundreds, occasional Sabine's Gulls, and grey phalaropes scattered across the headland's bay.
The lighthouse car park at Strumble Head is accessible and sheltered, and the headland's geography means you can watch in winds that would make an exposed cliff edge impossible.
Pendeen Watch, Cornwall
Pendeen in west Cornwall combines the bird-concentrating effect of Land's End with a watchpoint at a headland lighthouse with a small shelter for observers. The site is operated during peak autumn season by local ornithologists and casual visitors alike. Great and Sooty Shearwaters pass in autumn during northwesterly conditions; Cory's Shearwaters are annual from August. The same autumn gales that fire up Strumble Head typically produce excellent watching at Pendeen twelve to twenty-four hours later as systems track northeast.
Cape May, New Jersey
Cape May's seawatching is primarily about Northern Gannets, various scoter species, and coastal migration of alcids in late autumn and early winter. North-west winds in October and November push birds close along the shoreline. The combination of passerine fall on the cape and seawatching from the jetty makes Cape May one of the most productive single sites on the US Atlantic coast.
Pelagic trips: how they work
A pelagic birding trip books a small charter vessel — 20 to 50 passengers typically — and heads offshore to the Continental Shelf break or beyond. At shelf-edge depths, where cold deep water meets warmer surface water, seabirds concentrate around upwellings that push prey near the surface. The trip organiser scatters fish oil and bird-friendly food at the stern — a practice called chumming — to hold birds at boat speed and distance.
The trip is usually one long day, departing before dawn and returning at dusk. The open ocean motion is not the same as coastal chop; true pelagic conditions require the ship's stabilisers and most passengers' equilibrium.
Monterey Bay, California
Monterey Bay Pelagic trips, run by Shearwater Journeys among other operators, are the reference standard for Pacific pelagic birding in North America. The bay's submarine canyon creates productive upwelling close to shore. Trips typically encounter Black-footed Albatross, Pink-footed, Buller's, and Sooty Shearwaters, Ashy and Black Storm Petrels, Common Murres, Rhinoceros Auklets, and, on exceptional days, Short-tailed Albatross. Summer and autumn trips target shearwaters and phalaropes; winter trips target alcids and occasional rarities.
Cape Hatteras, North Carolina
The Gulf Stream runs close to Cape Hatteras, carrying warm-water seabirds — Audubon's Shearwater, Band-rumped Storm Petrel, White-tailed Tropicbird — within reach of half-day offshore trips. Brian Patteson's pelagic operations out of Hatteras have produced some of the most significant Atlantic pelagic records in North American birding history. The annual Hatteras pelagic weekends in late May attract observers from across the eastern US.
Bay of Biscay ferry crossings
The Brittany Ferries crossings between Plymouth or Portsmouth and Santander or Bilbao cross the Bay of Biscay, a deep water body renowned for seabird diversity. Cory's, Great, Balearic, and Sooty Shearwaters, European and Leach's Storm Petrels, Wilson's Storm Petrel in late summer, and European Spoonbills and skuas make long crossing days in September and October among the best seabird watching available in Europe without chartering a vessel.
The ferry's stern is the primary watching position: the wake disperses chum-like material from the engines and attracts following seabirds. Early September crossings regularly produce 10,000 or more Cory's Shearwaters in a single passage.
Shearwater and petrel identification basics
The two families account for most of what you will see on pelagic trips. Shearwaters fly on stiff wings in a characteristic banking, arcing flight — long glides alternating with short series of wingbeats, tilting to expose alternately the upper and underside. Larger species bank higher; smaller species fly lower and faster over the water surface.
Manx Shearwater is the reference species for the North Atlantic: black above, white below, direct flight with quick wingbeats. Sooty Shearwater is larger, entirely dark brown with a pale wing-flash on the underwing. Great Shearwater has a dark cap, white neck, and dark belly patch. Cory's Shearwater is the largest, with a pale grey-brown head that lacks the sharp cap contrast of Great.
Petrels are smaller and flutter-flight more than shearwaters. European Storm Petrel patters along the surface; Leach's has a forked tail and more bounding flight; Wilson's shows yellow-webbed feet dangled below.
Chumming ethics
Most pelagic trip operators use fish oil, popcorn, and fish offal to attract birds. Popcorn is inert; fish offal replicates natural food; fish oil creates a scent slick that guides birds to the boat from distance. The main ethical concerns are habituation effects on birds that follow commercial fishing vessels, and oil contamination risk at scale. For birding trips that run a few dozen times per season, the scientific consensus is that chumming at these levels does not cause population-level harm.
Sea-sickness
Being sick on a pelagic trip is sufficiently common that trip logistics routinely account for it. The remedies that work reliably are: scopolamine patches applied 12 hours before boarding, ginger capsules at high dose, and staying on deck looking at the horizon. Below deck in a hot cabin is the worst possible position. Take medication before you feel sick; it is far less effective once symptoms begin.
The map includes coastal birding sites and pelagic departure points. Planning a seabird session around the right headland and the right weather window requires knowing the geography — checking the map before a westerly gale is half the preparation.
