Gull Identification: Tackling the Dreaded Laridae

Gull identification has a reputation in the birding community that falls somewhere between "humbling" and "actively unpleasant." The reputation is earned: most gull species take three to four years to reach adult plumage, passing through multiple intermediate stages that do not closely resemble either the juvenile or the adult, and two or more closely related species often occupy the same winter flocks. Add individual variation, hybridization, and occasional aberrant plumages, and the challenge is real. But it is a manageable challenge, and the birders who find gulls genuinely rewarding rather than demoralizing have learned a systematic approach that reduces most identifications to a small number of decision points.

The four-year gull problem

Large gulls — Herring Gull (Larus argentatus), Lesser Black-backed Gull (Larus fuscus), Yellow-legged Gull (Larus michahellis), Caspian Gull (Larus cachinnans), and their relatives — take four years to reach full adult plumage. First-winter birds are predominantly brown and streaked, bearing little resemblance to the clean-plumaged adult. Second-winter birds have begun acquiring grey on the mantle but retain much brown. Third-winter birds are close to adult but show residual brown in the wings and may have a partial dark tail band. Only in the fourth calendar year do birds typically show the full clean adult pattern.

This means a winter gull flock at a coastal site contains birds in at least four plumage stages simultaneously. The apparent complexity dissolves when you accept it as structure: each plumage stage is predictable and learnable, and each species shows its own particular expression of each stage.

Start with the adults: mantle shade and wingtip

Adult gull identification focuses on three features assessed simultaneously: mantle shade (the grey or near-black back color), leg color, and the wingtip pattern in flight or on a standing bird with spread wings.

In Europe, mantle shade divides the large gulls cleanly. Herring Gull has a pale grey mantle. Lesser Black-backed Gull has a substantially darker grey to near-black mantle depending on subspecies. Yellow-legged Gull is intermediate — distinctly darker than Herring Gull, paler than most Lesser Black-backed — and has yellow legs even in winter. Caspian Gull has a mantle shade similar to Herring Gull but a distinctly different head shape: a slender, elongated bill, a gentle sloping forehead, and a small eye that gives the bird a different facial expression recognizable with practice.

Leg color: Herring Gull — pink. Lesser Black-backed Gull — yellow (in most subspecies). Yellow-legged Gull — bright yellow. Caspian Gull — pale pink to pale flesh-pink. These are reliable characters only in adults; first-winter birds of all large gull species have pink legs.

The small gulls: a more tractable group

Black-headed Gull (Chroicocephalus ridibundus), Common Gull (Larus canus), Mediterranean Gull (Ichthyaetus melanocephalus), and Little Gull (Hydrocoloeus minutus) are smaller, less variable, and identifiable with moderate effort. Mediterranean Gull, which has expanded substantially in range and now breeds north of its former Mediterranean range, is identifiable by its thick red bill, white wingtips (not the usual black), and slightly heavier jowl compared to Black-headed. Adult birds in breeding plumage are unmistakable; first-winter birds require attention to the dark-centered inner primaries that distinguish them from the pale-winged Black-headed.

Americana: the North American gulls

North American observers face Thayer's Gull (now lumped with Iceland Gull by most authorities), Glaucous-winged Gull, Western Gull, California Gull, and Ring-billed Gull alongside their European counterparts Herring Gull and Lesser Black-backed, which both occur as winter visitors on the Atlantic coast. California Gull is identifiable by its greenish-yellow legs, medium grey mantle, and small size relative to Herring Gull. Ring-billed Gull, the most abundant interior gull in North America, is cleanly identified by the complete black ring on its bill in adult plumage.

Hybrid gulls: the honest admission

Hybrid gulls exist and are encountered more commonly than their rarity would suggest, because hybrids between closely related species often closely resemble one parent and are only identifiable as hybrids by anomalous features. Herring x Glaucous Gull ("Nelson's Gull") is encountered irregularly in Iceland and Scandinavia. Herring x Lesser Black-backed hybrids occur in Britain and are identifiable by mantle shades intermediate between the two parents. Accepting that some individuals are unidentifiable, and recording them as "large gull sp.," is a mark of honest observation rather than failure.

Peter Adriaens and Chris Gibbins's work on Caspian Gull, freely available on the Internet Bird Collection, is the practical starting point for western Eurasian identification. Spending an hour at a productive gull roost — coastal fish harbors, inland reservoirs at dusk, and landfill sites — with this knowledge active produces more identification progress per hour than any amount of study at home.

A systematic approach to gull identification

Gull identification is the subject of a disproportionate fraction of birding literature relative to the number of species involved — approximately 50 species globally — because the combination of size variation within species, age-related plumage change across three or four years, geographic variation, and hybridization between closely related species creates an identification challenge unlike any other group.

The most productive framework for developing gull identification skills is to begin with adult large gulls (Herring Gull complex) in winter plumage at a regular roost site, then systematically add one new species per season after achieving confidence with the common species. Attempting to identify all gulls simultaneously in the first season leads to frustration without progress; the incremental approach builds a secure baseline.

The key variable that beginning gull watchers often underweight is structure. Bill size and shape, the slope of the forehead, the length of the wing projection beyond the tail, and the height of the legs vary significantly between species that are superficially similar in color. A Yellow-legged Gull (Larus michahellis) and a Herring Gull (Larus argentatus) in winter plumage on the same post can be separated reliably at range by the flat forehead and parallel bill of Yellow-legged versus the rounded head and more parallel-sided bill of Herring — details visible at 100 metres with a telescope even when the head streaking, leg colour, and eye ring are not assessable.

Klaus Malling Olsen's Gulls of Europe, Asia and North America (Helm, 2003) remains the most comprehensive reference for Old World gulls; Steve Howell and Jon Dunn's Gulls of the Americas (Peterson, 2007) covers New World species. Both use the "four-cycle" and "three-cycle" framework that organizes plumage sequences logically, allowing readers to find any age/species combination without memorizing the entire book.

Practical gull study produces rapid improvement because gulls are large, relatively slow-moving, and concentrate at predictable locations (fishing ports, landfill sites, reservoirs). Unlike secretive marsh birds or fast-moving raptors, a gull will sit on a post at close range in good light for minutes at a time, allowing systematic examination of all field marks. Using a telescope rather than binoculars for gull study dramatically improves the level of detail assessable.
